W. Kenneth Barnes

Kenneth Barnes is a resident of San Marcos and represents District 10, which covers the southern portion of Hays County. His current term expires December 1, 2008. Barnes serves as chair of the board’s Aquifer Management Planning Committee and is a member of the Permits Committee.

Barnes is retired, and continues to work on ranching and investment interests. He received a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin and has attended numerous professional development courses and seminars related to communications and management.

Barnes is an original organizer of the Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center at Southwest Texas State University and continues to serve as a member of its Advisory Council. He also served as Assistant to the President and Director of Public Affairs for Southwest Texas State University from 1972 to 1993 and as an administrator in the Texas House of Representatives in 1971-1972. Barnes has also worked as public relations counsel for Shell Oil Company and Gulf Oil Corporation, and as Vice-President and Director of Public Relations for Ada Oil Company.

Barnes’ civic and community involvement includes serving as organizer and past coordinator of the City of San Marcos/Southwest Texas State University Coordinating Council, past member of the chambers of commerce in San Marcos and Houston, and past member of the Tourist Development Council in San Marcos.
