LCRA Well Dye Injection

The LCRA well was a former production well located adjacent to Landa Park in New Braunfels, Texas. This is a flowing artesian well under average groundwater elevations. The well is in the artesian portion of the aquifer and is approximately 1,000 feet deep. The top of the Edwards Limestone is reached at about 600 feet below ground surface. A stand pipe was placed on top of the well to allow water to rise in the pipe without spilling onto the ground. A small plastic tube, 600 feet in length, was placed into the well casing and lowered to the top of the Edwards Limestone. In March 2002, two pounds of uranine dye were injected down the tube and into the limestone. Approximately 1,500 gallons of water was then injected into the well by the New Braunfels Fire Department to flush the dye into the formation. The dye appeared 36 hours later in the northwester part of Landa Lake. Groundwater velocities were determined to be approximately 2,000 feet per day.
