Rainstorm in Hill Country Rain falling in the drainage area and within the recharge zone generally affects water levels in the Edwards Aquifer very quickly. This occurs because the Edwards Aquifer transmits very large volumes of water due to the cavernous type porosity typical of a karst system. This effectively enables groundwater levels to respond quickly to rainfall (recharge) events. However, this rapid infiltration capability also allows contaminant influx with little or no filtration of incoming waters.
